Anthony B. Maiorana, 90, of Girard, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Hospice House in Poland, with his family by his side. Tony was born May 15, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Salvatore D. and Stella (DeLuca) Maiorana. Tony was a 1947 graduate of Girard High School and earned his Associate of Arts Degree at Pasadena City College in California in 1955 and his Bachelors of Science in Education degree in 1960 from Youngstown State University. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict were he had lead the USAF Boot Camps. Tony was instrumental in the Development of the Trumbull County Joint Vocational School. Tony taught school at Edison Junior High School, in Niles, for 33 years. He was an avid boxer and started boxing while in high school and continued through his service time as an amateur boxer, up until 1954 as a professional boxer, which earned him many titles and awards. He later became a boxing trainer for Girard, McDonald, Youngstown and Cleveland for over fifty years. In 1948 Tony was the Runner-Up in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Boxing and in 1949 Tony was the Air Force Champ in three weight classes- #112, #118, #126. Tony was "Boxer of the Year" in 1950 and 1951 by the San Antonio Express and was the "Cover Boy" in the January 22nd issue of the San Antonio Express Magazine. He was the football trainer for Niles McKinley Red Dragons and J.F.K. in Warren for several years. Tony was a faithful member of St. Rose Church, where he had been an usher for many years, the Knights of Columbus, Curbstone Coaches, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984, Legends of Leather, the Old Timers Club and Mahoning Valley Amateur Boxing and Trainers Association. Tony was a member of the Board of Education from 1960-1984, where he held offices of president and vice-president and had the honor to present high school diplomas to each of his five children. He was theTrumbull County Democratic Executive Committee and precinct committee man for many years. He was Recreation Director for the City of Girard and an umpire for the Youngstown Metropolitan Area. He was Camp Director for the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Sons of Italy Girard/Niles K of C and Little Peppino's Bocce Team, winning many tournaments, including the Triple Crown Championships. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children; Tina (Keith) Brown of Girard, Stella (Greg Yurco) Maiorana of Cortland, Teresa Maiorana of Cortland, Toni Lynn (Joe) Copploe of McDonald and Anthony (Shelly) Maiorana of Cary, NC., his sisters; Virginia Patti of Columbus, Providence Colantuoni of Florida, and Carmella Kramer of Maryland; a brother; Eugene (Marion) Maiorana of Florida, grandchildren; Tony "Dominic" (Briana) Simeone of Girard, Christopher (Hannah) Simeone of Ft. Worth, Texas, Matthew (Sarah) Simeone of Ft. Bragg, NC, Michael Edwards of Henderson, NE, Lisa Edwards of Niles, Joseph Copploe II of McDonald, Antonio Copploe of McDonald, Chloe Alexis Maiorana, Ava Olivia Maiorana and Luke Anthony Maiorana, a step-granddaughter; Allison Brown, and great-grandchildren; Gryphon (Edwards) Hurd, Mila Edwards, Anna Marie Simeone, Salvatore Simeone, Giovanna Simeone, Dominique Brown and Ryan Brown. Besides his parents, Tony is preceded in death by his wife, Tina (Ceravolo) Maiorana, whom he married May 12, 1956 and died December 10, 2013, sisters; Mary (Lou) Esposito, Stella Petko and Rose (Bill) DeVaul and brothers; Phillip Maiorana, Fred (Sandy) Maiorana and Guy Maiorana, and Salvatore Maiorana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 30th, 11:00 AM at St. Rose Church. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:00 AM- 11:00 AM at the church. Anthony will be laid to rest at Girard City Cemetery with military honors.
