Clarence P. "Shammy" Shambaugh, 97, of Buffalo, Wyoming, formerly of Girard, passed away on Friday August 24, 2012 at Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo, Wyoming. Clarence was born Dec. 10, 1914 in Wooster, Ohio, the son of the late Floyd and Zada Shambaugh. Shammy graduated from Wooster High School. In the late 1930's he played semi professional baseball in Ohio and Louisiana for both the Cleveland Indians and the St. Louis Cardinals. He signed a contract to pitch for the Cleveland Indians but opted out to join the Ohio Highway Patrol. He was a member of the 12th Academy Class of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Shammy also served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as an M.P. in England, Belgium and France. In 1953 he received a Citation of Merit from the Youngstown Crime Clinic for his work in law enforcement. He retired in 1967 from the Highway Patrol as a Captain in charge of enforcement and aviation for the State of Ohio. After retirement he went to work as a safety director for Lakeshore Motor Freight in Girard. Shammy is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Breznai and her husband Joseph, with whom he made his home with in Wyoming, two grandchildren Jennifer (Jeff) Jornigan of Warren and Christopher Breznai with the U.S.Navy in Bremerton, Washington, great-grandchildren Seth, McKayla and Roni and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, the former Billie Jo Sauerwein, whom he married Sept. 1, 1946 and passed away Feb. 24, 2007, and brothers Floyd and Russell Shambaugh. Funeral services will be held on Friday August 31, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard,where the family will receive relatives and friends from 1:00 until the time of service. Interment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery in Leetonia, Ohio.
