Donald J. Courtney

Donald J. Courtney, 88, of Girard, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2019, at his residence. Donald was born May 6, 1930 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of John and Marie (Knight) Courtney. He retired from Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. as a welder and had delivered flowers, for many years, for Swabek Flower Shop in Girard. Don served his country in the US Air Force. He was a member of St. Rose Church, the Girard Athletic Association and the YSU Backer's. Don had coached football and basketball for St. Rose, and for many years was a referee in Trumbull County for basketball and football games. He loved all kinds of sports and passed his love of sports onto his children and grandchildren. He attended all of his families sporting events whenever possible. Don was a huge Indians, Cavs, Browns and Ohio State Fan. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Lori Courtney, with whom he made his home and was his primary caregiver, Donald T. (Alma) Courtney, of St. Charles, Illinois, Cindy (Mike) Frankford, of Girard, Richard (Pam) Courtney, of Girard, Lynn Royer, of Youngstown, Dennis (Mary Ann) Courtney, of Girard and Robert (Michelle) Courtney, of Lake Milton, seventeen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his good friend and neighbor who was always there to help him, Joe Augustine. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa (Hubiack) Courtney, whom he married June 10, 1953 and died October 16, 2013, his son, John Courtney, brother, William Courtney and sisters, Jean Locaton and Mary Lou Huzjak. Private services were held on Monday at the Girard City Cemetery Chapel, where Don was laid to rest next to his wife.
