EDWIN M. STANDOHAR, 84
GIRARD – Edwin M. Standohar, 84, passed away peacefully at home on February 21st, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 8, 1930, a son of Mike and Mary (Curl) Standohar and was the youngest of eight children. Ed (“Slug”) was a life-long resident of Girard, attending Tod Woods School and graduating from Girard High School in 1948.
Mr. Standohar served his country from 1951-1955 in the United States Air Force Military Police and was stationed in North Africa. Upon his return, he graduated from Choffin Vocational School as a Carpenter. Later, as an Independent Contractor, Ed built and remodeled several homes in the area, including his own, and worked on numerous large commercial construction projects. In 1977, he began employment with General Motors in Lordstown, where he worked in skilled trades (Carpenters Shop) for 22 years until his retirement.
Ed was an avid sports fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoyed listening to Slovenian music and playing his ‘Button Box’ accordion with his brother Mike. After retirement, he played accordion with the “Polka Jammers” at McMenamy’s in Niles. Above all, he was a devoted family man who cherished life with his wife and supported his children and grandchildren in all their various activities.
He was a member of St. Rose Church, Girard Knights of Columbus, Carpenters Union #171, and the United Auto Workers Union in Lordstown.
Edwin will be remembered and deeply missed as a loving husband, father, papa, brother, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor (Moliterno) whom he married on July 25th, 1951. He leaves, to cherish his memory, four children: Mary Jane (Tom) Walker of Canfield, Karen (Dennis) Boback of Canfield, Jim (Marie) Standohar of Girard, and Atty. Mark (Nancy) Standohar of Girard. Ed also leaves behind ten grandchildren: Erika and Lee Walker, Brian, Jeff, and Audrey Boback, Kacy and Jimmy Standohar, and Caroline, Evan, and Mark Standohar.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers Michael and Joseph Standohar, and his five sisters, Mary Kostello, Jane Vezse, Agnes Zurcher, Frances Thomas,    and Ann Merrick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 25th at 11 a.m. at St. Rose Church in Girard. A prayer service will be held prior to the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery in Youngstown.
The family will receive relatives and friends for calling hours on Tuesday, February 24th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.
The Standohar family would like to thank Dr. Robert Spratt, Dr. Tom Boniface, Hospice of the Valley, and all medical staff who provided care to their loved one during his illness. Visit www.blackstonefuneralhome.com to view this obituary and to send any condolences to the Standohar family.
