d. October 13, 2012

Elizabeth A. "Liz" Cannon, 75, of Girard, passed away at the Autumn Hills Care Center in Niles, Ohio on October 13, 2012.  She was born January 26, 1937 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late Weldon H. and Ruth E.Dunkle. Elizabeth was a life-long resident of Girard and graduated from Girard High School in 1954.  She went on to business school and worked at Ohio  Leather Works in Girard and as a bank teller in Columbus while her husband attended dental school.  Later she became the bookkeeper for Cannon Medical Practice.  Elizabeth was active all her life and enjoyed playing tennis, golf and skiing as well as going on long walks.  She was a member of the Women's Dental Auxillary and helped to organize dental hygiene events in the surrounding communities.  She was active with many of her high school friends in a monthly "Club" which still meets regularly.  Elizabeth was a charter member of Open Door Community Church in McDonald, Ohio and served as a Sunday school teacher, VBS director and teacher and sang in the church choir.  She loved to sing and God gifted her with a beautiful voice.  Before her illness, Elizabeth enjoyed spending winters in Florida with family and friends.  However, her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.  She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Richard M. Cannon, her son Mark T. (Robin) Cannon of Chesapeake, VA, her daughter Susan L. (Michael) Taylor of Howland, Ohio and four grandchildren Jessica L. and Rachel A. Cannon, Jacob L. and Natalie E. Taylor.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 17th, 11:00 AM, at Open Door Community Church.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5-7PM at the Blackstone Funeral Home and also on Wednesday from 10-11AM at the church.  The family requests any material contibutions be made to the Church Memorial Fund or the Alzheimers Association.
