Evelyn May Mershimer, 96, of Girard, passed away Monday December 6, 2021 at Liberty Healthcare. Evelyn was born in Girard, Ohio on May 21, 1925. Her parents, Herbert L. Cramer Sr. and Janet Collins Cramer, preceded her in death along with her brothers Herbert Jr. and Richard and son James Allan Mershimer. She was the loving wife of John Audley Mershimer (died November 22, 1996) whom she married on April 24, 1948. She was the loving mother of Janet Voelkle (Donald), Robert Mershimer (Wanda), Paul Mershimer and son James Allan. She had 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She adored all of her family members and tried to keep the cookie jar full for visits from family.
A graduate of Girard High School in 1943 she worked at Truscon Steel offices in the payroll department from 1943 to 1948. She was a member of Girard Methodist Church since 1937. For many years she was a Kindergarten Sunday school teacher and played piano for the children's songs. An active young mother, she was a Cub Scout den mother, school room mother and helped with PTA activities. As her children grew she proudly supported them in school activities and even gave up her Sunbeam mixer so her son could use it as part of his science project.
Evelyn enjoyed many travels with her husband and other family members. Some of her memorable trips included Hawaii, Alaska and the birthplace of her mother Scotland. She kept busy with reading, crocheting, word puzzles, card club and playing piano. A wonderful friend to people of all ages, she could be counted on to provide a casserole, dessert or cheerful visit any time it was needed.
Calling Hours will be held Friday December 10th from 4:00-6:00 PM and Saturday December 11th from 10:00-11:30 AM with funeral service to follow at 11:30 at Blackstone Funeral Home. Evelyn will be laid to rest with her husband at Girard City Cemetery.
