Germaine J. Santon, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a brief illness. Germaine was born February 27, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of George and Julia (Baleski) Gillis. She was a member of St. Rose Church.
Working at a young age for General Fireproofing during WW II, she both labored as a “riveter” producing war-time aircraft parts and performed as an entertainer in her role as mistress of ceremonies for shows and productions with the General Fireproofing Band. She also worked in hospitality as a table server at several of Youngstown’s finer area restaurants. “Geri”, or “Sparky”, enjoyed music and dancing, where she retired from working at Kuzman’s in Girard taking admissions at the door for various polka and dance events. Everyone knew and loved “Geri”. With her gregarious personality and a warm smile for everyone, she still magically entertained people, engaging them with a warm hello followed by a witty snippet, and if you had time to talk, a humorous tale or two.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Germaine T. (Randy Ferguson) Santon, and Sandra (Gary Rhamy) Santon. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dominic G. Santon, whom she married July 3, 1948, her son, Dominic T. Santon, and sisters, Bertha Mollard, Julia Budrovec and Marie Sinclair.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Shepherd of the Valley Liberty for their care and compassion.
A family celebration of Germaine’s life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery next to her husband. Visit www.blackstonefuneralhome.com to view this obituary and to send any expressions of sympathy to the family.
