John Richard Matuszwski, 93, of Girard, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, at Shepherd of the Valley, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on January 17, 1931, in Niles, Ohio, the son of Michael and Anna (Somensky) Matuszwski.

A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, John served with distinction during the Korean Conflict, embodying bravery and an unwavering sense of duty to his country.

John’s dedication to education was evident throughout his long career as a teacher at Mathews and Girard High Schools, where he inspired generations of students. As an earth science teacher, his classroom was a place of both learning and life lessons. Many students remember his thought-provoking lectures, which often extended beyond textbooks, leaving lasting impressions. John also shared his love for sports by coaching high school football and basketball, fostering teamwork and perseverance in countless young athletes.

A devout member of St. Rose Church in Girard, John was also active in the Knights of Columbus and the Trumbull County Teachers Association. A talented musician, he was the bandleader of Johnny Matus and His Orchestra and a proud member of the Musician's Union, playing the accordion and bringing joy to many through his music.

Though John’s accomplishments were numerous, his greatest pride and joy was his family. He often said that when surrounded by his loved ones, he considered himself the luckiest man in the world. But in truth, we were the fortunate ones, blessed by his love, wisdom, and kindness.

John had a rare gift: the ability to make everyone feel special. Whether through a warm conversation or a genuine interest in others’ lives, he made each person he encountered feel heard and valued.

He leaves behind the love of his life and wife of nearly seventy years, Beatrice (Umeck) Matuszwski, whom he married on February 19, 1955. He is also survived by his cherished children, Karla (Ming Hua) Cheng, Lori (Howard) Ulicny-Smith, and Saundra (BJ) Farr, along with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate caregivers from Cornerstone Caregiving, SouthernCare Hospice, and Shepherd of the Valley Liberty, who provided such wonderful care. John deeply appreciated each and every one of you.

Calling hours will be held at St. Rose Church in Girard on January 22, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. John will be laid to rest with military honors at Girard City Cemetery.

John's legacy of love, service, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
