Johnie L.W. Holmes

Johnie L.W. Holmes, of Vienna, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, on June 10, 2016. Johnie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sylvia Ella (Scott) Holmes. Johnie was born in Alamo, Georgia on February 22, 1938, the son of Theo Holmes and Elease (Aikens) Holmes. Johnie worked as a foreman at Youngstown Sheet and Tube before continuing his education. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University in Secondary Education and earned his Master Degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph's. He retired after 20 years of teaching in the Campbell School System. He enjoyed coaching football and any of the various sports that his children and grandchildren were involved in. Johnie was an ordained minister in The Pentecostal Faith and served as an ordained minister in The Baptist Faith. He was also the finance executive board chair of First Baptist Church of Girard, Ohio, where he made his home. He was also an active member on the board of Neighborhood Ministries. He loved his family and took every opportunity to encourage and support them. Survivors include his 5 children - John Anthony (Teresa) Holmes of Rockford, Illinois, Glenn (Carol) Holmes of McDonald, Sheryl (Ty) Gent of Prosper, Texas, Alycia Holmes of Girard and Sylvia (Anthony) Winston of Green, as well as his mother-in-law, Alice Ivory of Youngstown, his sister-in-law Jackie Jeffries of Youngstown,his (Sis) Wilma Ingram of Campbell. Johnie also leaves in his legacy, 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 15th, 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Girard, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
