Mary E (Wecht) Greathouse

October 18, 1933 — November 15, 2016

After a long illness, Mary E. Greathouse, 83, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family and friends on November 15, 2016. The daughter of Albert and Roselyn (Kelley) Wecht, she was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on October 18, 1933.  Mary grew up in Girard with her mother Roselyn and step-father Donald E. Stephenson. She was a 1951 graduate of Girard High School.  She married Raymond W. Greathouse on August 21, 1954.  Her husband of 47 years preceded her in death on February 26, 2001. Mary enjoyed many activities and loved animals.  She was an active member of St. Rose Church. She loved her years of working with Cub Scouts and the Girard Head Start Program. Mary had a generous and loving nature.  Her greatest joy was her family.  She will also be remembered with great affection by the countless “kids” she welcomed and nurtured over the years and who referred to her as “Mom”.  Mary exhibited a true Christian spirit and never turned away anyone in need. Mary is survived by her two children, Eugene R. Greathouse and Alice Thomas, both of Girard.  A brother Donald E. Stephenson Jr. (Nancy) of Girard, 3 grandchildren; Emiley Isenberg (fiancé Paul Kocoras) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Sean Thomas (Michelle) of Austintown and Angel Greathouse of Girard, as well as a niece Roselyn and nephews Anthony and John.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Donna, her brother John, nephew Donald Stephenson III, her niece Shawna and daughter-in-law Joy Greathouse. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 22nd, 11:00 AM at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
