Mary Ann Opalenik Scala, 98, of Youngstown, passed away on Monday November 10, 2014 at Park Vista Nursing Care Center. Mary was born March 28, 1916 in Webster, Pa., the daughter of Stephen and Anna Serotka Opalenik. Mary retired as an LP nurse working for St. Elizabeth Hospital for 25 years. She had been a volunteer for Red Cross for 22 years. A member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Youngstown, where she was in the church choir for 50 years and was a member of the Mt. Carmel Senior Citizens and Our Mother of Crucifix Society. Mary is survived by her daughter, Shirley Scala-DiCroce and husband Nick of Solvang, California, her two granddaughters, Dana DiCroce -Hartley and Kathy DiCroce-Brown, her four great-grandchildren; Isabella, Jordan, Jessica and Hayden and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Felice Mario Scala, whom she married in 1935 and died in 1955, her sisters; Ann Gelesky, Elizabeth Rominger, Helen Multari and Julia Yonkers and her brothers; Frank, John, Stephen Jr. and George Opalenik. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 13th, 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown, Ohio, preceded by a prayer service at 9:15 AM at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5-7PM at the funeral home. The family request in lieu of flowers that any material contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley. Mary will be laid to rest at St. Michael's Byzantine Cemetery in Hermitage, Pa.
