GIRARD - Michael Louis Andello, 94, passed away peacefully, August 16, 2017, at his home with his family by his side.
Mike was born Sunday, September 17, 1922 to the late Joseph and Maddelena (Chicarelli) Andello. He was the sixth born of eight children.
In his senior year of high school, he left what he knew to join the United States Air Force and served his country proudly in World War II. He spoke often of the times that he was able to spend with his late brother, David, while overseas. Upon returning home after war, he received his GED, and began his career in construction with Local 171 Youngstown. He retired after 40 years of work and service.
As a lifelong resident of Girard, he was a member of Knights of Columbus, Girard High School Athletic Association, and the Girard Free Library, where for many years you would find him on any given afternoon. He enjoyed watching golf, but more so he enjoyed playing. He traveled many times to golf throughout the years, but it was two times at Mahoning Country Club in Girard and one time at Pine Lakes in Hubbard where he was most proud as he shot holes-in-one. As a fan of all teams Ohio, his weekends in the fall were spent with the Cleveland Browns and his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.
Mike could be found walking his 3 miles each morning at Girard Arrowhead Stadium, or at the Eastwood Mall where he was a Mall Walker since the 1970's. After his walks, he spent time with friends enjoying coffee at Burger King for many years. He drove until he turned 94, fixed and built anything he could, talked about the Browns and Buckeyes with anyone, and exuded joy in his time spent with his great-grandson, Owen Michael.
Mike leaves his daughter Mary Madeline Baxter of Girard; Granddaughter Jamie Lynne Baxter (Jay Rodemoyer) of Hubbard; Great-grandson Owen Michael, and another baby boy on the way; 3 generations of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Madeline (Pignanelli) Andello. They wed on August 19, 1950. Though their time together was short, they made a home together and welcomed their only child, Mary Madeline, into this world. When he spoke of her, his smile was warm and his eyes were bright. Besides his "Darling" wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, David, Samuel, and John Andello; his sisters Mary Jane Andello, Evelyn Andello, Gladys Michaels, and Ann Mariotti; his niece Mary Francis.
Calling hours and service will be at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. You may call on Sunday, August 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Monday, August 21, from 9 to 10 a.m. with a funeral service beginning at 10 a.m.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
