Nedra Altier

Nedra Grubaugh Altier, 100, of Girard died Monday November 10, 2014 at her residence. She was born June 23, 1914 in Van Wert County, Ohio, the daughter of the late William P. and Ada McClelland Grubaugh. Nedra graduated from Union High School, earned an Associate degree at Ohio Northern University, a B.A. from Bluffton College, and years later a Master's degree in education from Youngstown State University. Before her marriage she taught at Union School and Willshire High School in Van Wert County. In 1941 she married Kenneth J. Altier, her college sweetheart and spent the next 24 years as a full-time wife and mother. Together they raised six children. In 1965 she returned to teaching, first at Southington High School then at Edison Junior High and McKinley High School in Niles. After retirement she was a literacy volunteer taught English as a second language to many foreign language speakers, and worked as a volunteer at Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard. She was a nondenominational Christian but worshiped in the Catholic congregations for over sixty-five years. She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She leaves her daughter, Mary and her husband John Walker of La Selva Beach, CA., three sons, Mark of Columbus, Shawn and wife Dominique of Paris, France, and Craig and wife Maureen of Freeville, NY, brother, Kenneth W. Grubaugh and wife LouEllen of Davis CA, six grandchildren, Christopher and wife Katie of Blacklick, OH, Kate Reagan and Meghanne of Columbus, Amanda and husband Dillion of Las Vegas NV, Elizabeth and Maria of Freeville, and one step-granddaughter, Laurence Miolano of Paris, six great-grandchildren, Ben and Abby Reagan, August, Caroline and Graham Altier and Louna Sagi and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Paul, daughter, Beth, three brothers, Col. Glover P. Grubaugh, Col. Boyd L. Grubaugh, USAF and Beryl Grubaugh, sister, Betheen Grubaugh and daughter-in-law, Sandy Altier. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday November 15, 2014 at 10:30 am at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. Family will recieve relatives and friends on Friday from 6-8 and on Saturday from 10:00 am till time of service. Nedra will be laid to rest at Girard City Cemetery.
