Rev. Bernard R. Schmalzried Jr.

Rev. Bernard R. Schmalzried Jr., 75, of Girard, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at his residence. Rev. Bernard was born November 29, 1942 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Bernard and Alice (Geis) Schmalzried Sr.  He attended St. Rose Elementary School, Ursuline High School and Youngstown State University.
Father Schmalzried studied for the priesthood at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary of the West Seminaries in Cincinnati, earning a bachelor’s in philosophy and a master’s in theology.
He was ordained August 2, 1969 in his home parish of St. Rose, by the Most Reverend James W. Malone.
Following ordination Father Schmalzried served as associate pastor of St. Christine Parish in Youngstown.  Two years later, he joined the faculty of Cardinal Mooney High School and served summers at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Aurora, St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls and St. Joan of Arc in Streetsboro and as Chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.  In 1976 he was appointed to the newly-created post of administrative assistant for pastoral ministry at Cardinal Mooney High School, which evolved into associate principal.  In August of 1984 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish in Warren.  In 1988, while serving as pastor of St. Mary parish, he was appointed Director of the Warren Parochial School System for a three year term.  Father Schmalzried retired on December 1, 2017, having served as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Warren for nearly 34 years.
In addition to his parish and teaching appointments, Father Schmalzried served on the Diocesan Senate, as a Diocesan Consultor, on Priests Council, on the Priests’ Personnel Board, on the Diocesan Catholic Cemeteries Board, and as Dean of Trumbull County.  He served as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Warren Council #620 and as Chaplain for the Cardinal Mooney High School football team.
Father Schmalzried was active in coordinating religious education programs for persons with mental disabilities, especially a volunteer ecumenical program based on the Leonard Kurtz School.
Rev. Bernard enjoyed backpacking in Allegheny National Forrest and trips to Canadohta Lake with his family. He loved history, especially Civil War and WW II events. He is survived by his brothers, Albert (Mary) Schmalzried of Vienna and James (Pam) Schmalzried of Girard, his sister, Sr. Maureen Schmalzried of Emmitsburg, Maryland, sister-in-law Lenora Schmalzried of Girard, several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Dulcie. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert J. Schmalzried  and his sisters, Mary "Sunshine" Schmalzried and Margaret Elizabeth Schmalzried. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 16th, 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church in Warren. Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 4-7 PM at St. Mary's Church and also on Friday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Rev. Bernard will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
