Shirley D. Landy (1935-2024)
“I don’t want to leave, but I can’t stay.”
Shirley Delores Landy, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 11, 2024. She was born on October 14, 1935 to parents Virginia Tauro (Fusco) and Louis Tauro in Girard, Ohio. A graduate of Girard High School in 1953, Shirley worked as a secretary at William B. Pollock Co., Liberty Schools, and Liberty Township. She married Donald J. Landy on June 20, 1959.
They resided in Liberty, raising their three children, Patrick C. Landy (Suzanne) of South Carolina, Kathleen Lehner (Robert “Sid”) of Girard, and Mary Beth Pallante (Raymond) of Austintown. Shirley was very proud of her grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives: Kevin and Lou Landy of South Carolina, Kaitlin Lehner of Girard, Corie Lehner (fiancé Drew Julian) of Florida, Karly (David) Stana of Youngstown, and Raymond Pallante of Cleveland. Shirley also had four beautiful great-grandchildren: Riley Landy, Kellen Landy, Beckett Landy, and Henlee Landy residing in South Carolina. Shirley’s husband, Don, died on September 17, 1996. He had been ill for most of their marriage.
In her later years, Shirley enjoyed the peace and quiet of living alone. She was a fiercely determined and independent woman. Her family could always rely on her to provide her honest opinion, whether they wanted to hear it or not. In addition to sharing her opinions, Shirley always shared in every holiday and celebration, hosting and cooking classic Italian food for her family. Shirley’s strong character and humor always persevered. She died as she lived her life: managing all aspects on her own terms. Her iron will garnered respect from all of those around her.
A million thank yous to Don and Becky Whistler. We should all be so lucky as to have neighbors as wonderful as the both of you. The family would also like to thank Patriot Hospice, Palliative, and Home Care. You all did an amazing job. We are truly appreciative for your help with this difficult journey.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, May 16th from 10AM-12PM at St. Rose Church in Girard followed by a Memorial Mass at 12:00 PM.
Shirley will be laid to rest at Churchill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all donations go to Autism Speaks. Donations can be submitted on their website at www.autismspeaks.org.
